How to analyze case studies?
Step-wise Approach
The step-wise approach to analyzing and writing a management case study is as follows:
Step 1
Read the case quickly to get an overview of the firm, the industry and the specific situation that the company finds itself.
Step 2
Read the case again thoroughly with the objective of identifying the primary and secondary problem(s). Underline relevant information and/or take notes on important facts/issues and potential areas of concern.
Step 3
Record the major issues, problems and their core elements. Also, note down the various applicable management concepts based on which the problem(s) were identified.
Step 4
Record and identify the causes of the problem(s) identified above based on the facts of the case.
Step 5
With whatever knowledge you have gained so far, identify and list the feasible solutions as well as their pros and cons.
Step 6
Read the case study again to evaluate whether the feasible alternative solutions identified earlier are really viable. Also, explore the possibility if any additional viable alternatives are available to deal with the situation. Here again, note down the various applicable management concepts.
Step 7
Record each feasible option as well as discuss the pros and cons of each to determine the best course of action. Here you may also want to compare the various feasible options with each other. Such a comparison will assist you in ultimately recommending the best solution.
Step 8
Record your recommendation with reasons for the same. Also, justify your recommendation based on a particular management concept(s).
